About the Role

Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti is pleased to open applications for a General Paediatric Fellow in our Paediatric Department here at Gisborne Hospital, Tairāwhiti.  This is a 12 month fixed term position, however placements for less than this duration will also be considered.

The suitable candidate will have completed both the written and clinical FRACP examinations in Paediatrics and be within 18 months of completing advanced training in paediatrics. The clinical attachment in Gisborne is accredited for 6 months of rural training and 6 months non-core training. It is also accredited for 6 months of the developmental/community component of General Paediatric training.

The Fellow will function as a junior consultant under specialist paediatrician supervision at all times.  They will carry out their own outpatient clinics, ward rounds and on-calls as the lead doctor with a specialist paediatrician available and supporting them at all times.

Position Description | Paediatric Fellow

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Fellow will be responsible for paediatric and neonatal assessment and treatment of both inpatients and outpatients under his/her care to a secondary specialist level.  The on-call roster is 1:6, with the trainee included on the SMO roster. The Fellow will be exposed to Level 2 neonatal practice and be involved in the care of infants 32 weeks and above, and the stabilisation and transfer of unwell neonates or those <32 weeks.

Our focus is on your learning. We have an active educational program within the department and you will be part of preparing teaching for colleagues and junior staff.  There is dedicated non-clinical time to allow the fellow to achieve this along with dedicated time for self-directed learning – e.g. SIM training. We also encourage the fellow to attend training courses during their time here (e.g. Griffiths training, ADOS, APLS).

Finally, in addition to the outpatient based care delivery, for those fellows interested in outreach medicine there are opportunities to participate in outreach clinics to our rural communities and the Rheumatic Heart Disease screening program.
