About the Role

We are looking for individuals who can support our taangata whaiora and their whaanau during their admission period across our inpatient services. 

Maaori are significantly represented across our services, which is why we are moving towards becoming a ‘culturally led, clinically underpinned’ service

Delivering excellent care in a culturally responsive manner, to support the best outcomes for Maaori is fundamental to our mahi.

Responsibilities of the role:

  • To report observed changes in tangata whaiora’s health status to the registered health professional
  • To have an understanding of potential/ actual risk factors and how to de-escalate and escalate to ensure the safety of our tāngata whaiora
  • To apply culturally safe principles in the workplace
  • There is an expectation these roles will work across all shifts (morning, afternoon, night)

About the Team/Service

These roles offer an opportunity to work as part of a dynamic and passionate team in a variety of in-patient mental health environments; every day is different and you have the opportunity to make a real impact to the lives of others.

We currently have very limited positions available; candidates with a good understanding of Te Ao Maaori and the ability to support our Maaori tangata whaiora through a strong Te Ao Maaori lens will be prioritised for interview.

 

About Hamilton

Waikato Hospital is a major regional hospital in Hamilton and is a leading tertiary teaching hospital located in Hamilton, New Zealand, serving as the regional hub for the Midland area, which includes the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, and Taranaki districts. With around 722 inpatient beds, 22 operating theatres, and a dedicated outpatient clinic and procedure centre, Waikato Hospital provides comprehensive hospital services, including radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy. As a major teaching hospital with affiliations to the University of Auckland, University of Waikato, and Wintec, it offers a dynamic learning environment and access to research opportunities. The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities located on the Waiora Waikato Hospital Campus, with both road and air ambulance support.

 

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Experience in upholding Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
  • A passion for making a difference to the lives of our tangata whaiora and whanau
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
