About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Medical Outpatients Operational Manager to join the close-knit team of the Medical Specialties and Outpatient Service.
This is a dynamic and rewarding leadership role that spans a range of medical subspecialties including Cardiology, Respiratory, Rheumatology, Neurology, General Medicine, and Infectious Diseases. The successful applicant will provide strategic and operational leadership across multi-disciplinary teams, including medical, nursing, allied health, physiologists, sonographers, and HCAs.
The role is supported by an Assistant Clinical Nurse Manager and physiologist professional leads, and works in close partnership with clinicians, booking teams and service departments to ensure equitable, timely and accessible care across our localities. About the Team/Service/ Location
Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay is situated in the central region of Aotearoa New Zealand and serves a population of around 170,000 people. Our regional hospital in Hastings is one of the largest provincial hospitals in the country and provides a range of outpatient clinics and surgical theatres.
The Medical Specialties & Outpatient Service also has strong ties with our services across Napier, Wairoa, and Waipukurau. You’ll be joining a collaborative, future-focused team who are passionate about continuous improvement and patient-centred care.

About you
You are an experienced and forward-thinking health operations leader who thrives in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. You bring with you a deep understanding of healthcare systems and service delivery, ideally with experience managing outpatient or specialty services in a hospital or regional health setting.
You have proven leadership capability and can demonstrate how you’ve effectively led, supported, and inspired teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. You’re confident in managing complexity, adapting to change, and using data to inform decisions that improve service efficiency and clinical outcomes.
You’ll be comfortable navigating the operational demands of a busy service, including workforce planning, rostering, performance and financial management, and continuous quality improvement. Importantly, you are also a relationship builder — someone who fosters collaborative, respectful partnerships with clinicians, service managers, booking teams, and support services.
Cultural competence and an understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are essential, along with a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and improving health outcomes for Māori and other priority populations.
You will ideally hold a relevant tertiary qualification in health management, health sciences, or a related field and have previous leadership experience in a healthcare environment.
