Medical Laboratory Scientist (POCT)

Part Time, permanent role - rostered and rotating shifts
About the role
The Laboratory at Taranaki Base Hospital is recruiting a Part‑time (0.5 FTE) Point‑of‑Care Testing (POCT) Scientist, commencing 15 June 2026. This permanent role partners with our POCT Coordinator to deliver safe, standards‑aligned POCT across hospital wards and affiliated services. You will assist with device verification/acceptance testing, quality control and external quality assurance, operator training and competency, documentation and audits, and support connectivity of POCT devices with the LIS/EHR.
We welcome applicants with the following attributes:
- A relevant Medical Laboratory Science qualification.
- Current registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ as a Scientist (provisional registration acceptable).
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of: POCT governance, verification/validation, IQC/EQA, operator training/competency assessment, and device connectivity/middleware.
- Strong relationship and coaching skills to support non laboratory clinical users, with clear written and verbal communication.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively, manage competing priorities, and maintain meticulous documentation within a quality management system.
- Comfortable working autonomously within a defined scope and contributing to service improvement initiatives.
Nice to have (not essential): familiarity with common POCT platforms (e.g., blood gas, glucose/ketone, cardiac markers), and preparation for accreditation assessments.
