Counties Manukau District is offering several Health Psychology Internships for next year!

If you are undertaking an internship next year through the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology under the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, The University of Auckland, we would like to invite you to apply.

We have 3 internships available across a range of different physical health specialities as described below. Health psychologists and health psychology interns work in these areas to provide psychosocial assessment and intervention alongside staff education and research while also contributing to service quality improvement initiatives. Our service users are those residing in the Counties Manukau catchment area. We aim to truly make a difference in the multicultural community that we serve.

Internships will be available across the following services:

Cancer Support Psychology & Social Work - Full time 1FTE

Psychologists in this service aim to improve the experience for patients, including family and whaanau, with cancer or suspected cancer by delivering evidence-based interventions and assessments. This position involves working in a team of health psychologists and social workers and includes the provision of individual psychological care to patients and their whaanau. This internship is based at Middlemore Hospital, but interns will be required to travel to other locations to deliver outpatient clinics across satellite sites. 

Renal and Diabetes - Full time 1FTE

The Renal and Diabetes Services are located at Middlemore Hospital. The health psychologists provide psychological care for inpatients, outpatients and patients on dialysis. Outpatient care is delivered across multiple satellite sites in the Counties Manukau area. This role involves providing psychological assessment and treatment services for patients under the diabetes and renal services and has a strong MDT approach.

Pain - Part time 0.9FTE

The Chronic Pain Service provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for people with chronic pain. The service has a strong interdisciplinary focus, providing multidisciplinary assessments, single and multi-disciplinary interventions, and group pain management programmes for sufferers of chronic pain from South Auckland. The Chronic Pain Services based at Manukau SuperClinic but also delivers outpatient care across a number of satellite sites. 

Essential:

  • Eligible to register in the intern scope of practise with the NZ Psychology Board
  • Accepted into the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology under the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, The University of Auckland to undertake an internship in 2026
  • A full, clean driver’s licence

Interviews:

  • Interviews will be held on the 4th and 6th of November 2025
  • You must be available for an interview if you wish to apply. If you are not in Auckland on these dates, interview can be conducted via MS Teams.
