Health Psychologist - Gastroenterology, Psychological Medicine Service
Remuneration as per APEX Psychologists MECA guidelines
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role:
The Psychological Medicine Service is seeking an experienced psychologist to join their innovative team and collaborate closely with the Gastroenterology Service.
The Gastroenterology Service specialises in the investigation and care of diseases affecting the gastrointestinal system, including the liver and pancreas. It provides both inpatient and outpatient services predominantly based at Middlemore Hospital, with care also delivered across multiple satellite sites throughout the Counties Manukau District.
Inpatient services include a dedicated ward team and registrar for consultations and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Outpatient care encompasses diagnostic, surveillance, and therapeutic procedures, as well as outpatient clinics for first specialist assessments and follow-ups. The service also features a familial gastrointestinal cancer clinic and a specialised liver clinic. Additionally, an increasing number of patients receive regular biologic infusions (such as infliximab) via the infusion center.
Health psychologists play a vital role by conducting comprehensive assessments that consider the person’s difficulties from a broad bio-psycho-social and developmental perspective. This includes detailed psychological, cognitive, and behavioural interviews, as well as standardised assessment tools.
Previous clinical experience in a healthcare setting is highly desirable. Since this role may involve working with adolescents, experience in this population group is also advantageous.
Interventions typically include:
- Individual therapy (commonly using CBT and/or ACT approaches)
- Group and family therapy
- Psychoeducational and therapeutic groups
- Behavioural management strategies
- Case consultation with medical teams
We are committed to the ongoing professional development of our psychologists and provide robust clinical supervision and opportunities for skill enhancement.
Essential:
- Eligible to register or registered with the NZ Psychologists Board
- Current Annual Practising Certificate with the NZ Psychologists Board
- A minimum 12 months practical experience
- Full, clean driver’s licence
