Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role:
The Counties Manukau Division of Medicine encompasses a range of subspecialty services. This position spans two key services — Adult Weight Management and the Diabetes Service — and is further supported by the Psychological Medicine Service, ensuring comprehensive, wrap-around care. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Health Psychologist to join our innovative and supportive teams.
We welcome applicants with a strong interest in working with individuals affected by diabetes and obesity and demonstrated expertise in medical bariatrics and weight management. Our services are delivered across multiple outpatient satellite sites throughout the Counties Manukau region. You will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team including clinical nurse specialists, medical and nurse practitioners, dietitians, and health coaches — all committed to delivering integrated, person-centred care. In this role, your psychological expertise will enhance holistic assessments, guide intervention planning, and strengthen our collective ability to support patients with complex and interrelated health needs.
Interventions typically include:
- Psychological screening and assessment for conditions impacting weight management, including binge eating disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma history (including abuse), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Development and delivery of evidence-based psychological interventions utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles
- Design and creation of self-help materials and psychoeducational resources aligned with international guidelines for weight management and diabetes remission
- Facilitation of structured group therapy programmes addressing psychological barriers to weight management and lifestyle change
- Provision of brief supportive counselling sessions and intensive individual therapy as clinically indicated
- Trauma-informed care approaches for clients with histories of abuse or adverse childhood experiences
- Collaborative care planning with multidisciplinary team members to address psychological aspects of metabolic health conditions
- Participation in service development initiatives, quality improvement projects, and clinical research activities
- Programme evaluation and outcome measurement activities to assess intervention effectiveness
- Staff consultation and training on psychological aspects of weight management and diabetes care
Essential:

- Current Annual Practising Certificate with the NZ Psychologists Board
- A minimum of 12 months of practical experience
