About the Role

The primary purpose of the Health Care Assistant role is to work alongside your colleagues to provide assistance to patients to meet their needs of daily living, comfort and safety needs. Working under the direction and delegation of Nursing and Midwifery, this role contributes to supporting safe care for patients and whanau by assisting with delegated activities and supporting the maintenance of a safe, pleasant, functional environment as part of the healthcare delivery team.

You will be based either in the Accident & Medical Department, or the General Ward. It will involve working on a shift roster between Monday – Sundays, 40 hours per week.

Tasks included:

  • Assistance with meals and drinks service
  • Answering patient call bells and reporting to the supervising Nurse any patient requirements that fall outside of support functions
  • Hygiene, toileting, dressing, eating/drinking and mobilisation assistance as directed
  • Checking, ordering and restocking of supplies
  • Maintenance and cleaning of sluice room and treatment areas
  • Assistance with bed making, assembling patient bed spaces for admission and discharge
  • Cleaning and maintenance of equipment
  • Performing reception and greeting functions in a professional manner
  • Use communication skills (verbal and non verbal) to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and the health care team

About the Team/Service/ Location

Kaitaia Hospital is Health New Zealand’s northernmost hospital. It is a general hospital serving a widely scattered population. The 20 bed hospital has a general ward, maternity and paediatric ward with all the supporting services, and also provides a substantial community health service.

About you

We are looking someone who is physically fit to assist with lifting/moving patients and equipment. You will need to have an excellent standard of written and oral English language.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated ability to organise workload and manage time effectively
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
