About the Role

The goal of the Perinatal Pathology Fellowship program is to provide an opportunity for pathologists to gain competency, proficiency, and diagnostic excellence in the practice of perinatal pathology. At the conclusion of the fellowship program, you will have experience in perinatal pathology and understand how the perinatal pathology service operates in New Zealand. The fellowship will be based in Auckland, you will be involved in the national perinatal pathology service (NPPS), including undertaking autopsies that will include completing the reports and reviewing cases with senior pathologists. The Fellow will also perform placental examination and reporting histological slides from the surgical pool of placentas. You will be expected to attend multidisciplinary meetings to present cases you have been involved with. The Fellow will be expected to undertake a small research project and to present the results to a pathology meeting either in New Zealand or Australia.

The perinatal pathology fellow will report to the NPPS National Clinical Lead and will work as part of the perinatal pathology team within Auckland Hospital and across Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the Service

The National Perinatal Pathology Service (NPPS) was endorsed as a National Service in 2010 and formalised in 2019. Health New Zealand Te Toka Tumai Auckland was appointed the lead Health NZ District with the responsibility of managing the national service. Additionally, Health NZ Te Toka Tumai Auckland was appointed the host Health NZ District for perinatal pathology services for Northern, Midland and Central Region Health NZ Districts, including Nelson Marlborough, while Health NZ Waitaha Canterbury was appointed the host Health NZ District for the South Island. Both providers work together to provide a streamlined, consistent, culturally appropriate service, ensuring there is back-up and support for each other as required. The service has perinatal pathologists based across the three sites, in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

About you

In order to be considered for the fellowship, you will need to have:

• FRCPA or equivalent formal postgraduate anatomic pathology qualification accepted by the Medical Council of NZ (MCNZ).
• Meet the requirements of the MCNZ ‘Special purpose postgraduate training’ registration.
