About the Role

  • ACEM-accredited for 24 months of training; structured teaching programme with protected time.
  • Supervision of 4th and 6th year Auckland University medical students.
  • Strong support for CME: external CME funding, internal CME programme, and peer review.
  • Clinical leads in ultrasound and trauma; active M&M programme and audit cycle.
  • Committed to ACEM’s *Manaaki Mana* strategy; close collaboration with local Māori Health team.
  • Tier 2 ED with high trauma volume due to rural geography and outdoor activities (e.g., mountain biking).
  • Part of the Midland Regional Trauma System; 24/7 in-house trauma team.
  • Acute services on site; transfers to Waikato Hospital for Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Vascular, and Plastics. 

About the Team/Service/ Location

  • Join a friendly, collegial team of 12 Emergency Physicians, supported by 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 14 RMOs (Registrars, SHOs, and HOs)
  • 38,000 ED presentations annually; 30–35% admission rate; 25% paediatric presentations. 
  • 34-bed ED: 2 resus bays, 5 acute monitoring cubicles, 17 monitored cubicles, 4 paediatric rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and dedicated Whānau and Palliative Care rooms.
  • 24/7 access to Radiology, Lab, and Blood Bank services.
  • Health New Zealand - Lakes provides healthcare from its two modern and progressive general hospitals in Rotorua and Taupo, New Zealand. The Lakes district is well known for its many outdoor recreational activities such as mountain biking, skiing, and fishing.

About you

  • Use your varied and broad generalist knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat your patient in ED, through to discharge or stabilise and transfer patients to the Secondary/Tertiary Hospitals when required.
  • You’ll be within 3 months of obtaining your Emergency Medicine qualification and or hold/be eligible for Specialist Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
