About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic Senior Medical Officer to join our team as Consultant Microbiologist.
Whether you’re already working as a consultant, recently graduated, or due to finish your training in the next 12-18 months, your application will be warmly considered.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Based in the Waikato region, our Pathology Service operates across five laboratory sites, providing a broad spectrum of diagnostic testing and specialist referrals for the wider region.
You’ll be part of a team delivering comprehensive microbiology services, including:
- Bacteriology and Mycology
- Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing
- Mycobacterial Culture and Drug Susceptibility Testing
- Infectious Disease Serology
- Molecular Diagnostics for Viral and Bacterial Pathogens
This position is based at Waikato Hospital and offers full time hours with flexibility, including the option for a mix of onsite and remote work. Some out of hours on call duties are required.
We pride ourselves on delivering both high-volume and specialist testing, supported by close collaboration between our microbiology and infectious disease departments. Weekly laboratory and clinical meetings foster a strong interdisciplinary approach to patient care and scientific excellence.
About You
- A qualified or soon to qualify Clinical Microbiologist with relevant registration and experience
- Strong diagnostic and analytical skills
- A collaborative mind-set and commitment to clinical excellence
- Interest in contributing to service development and innovation

Waikato Hospital is in the heart of Hamilton city, a vibrant and welcoming community with a reasonable cost of living and easy commute.
