About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Physician with specialist qualifications in Geriatric Medicine to join the Geriatric Medicine Service at Waikato Hospital.
The Geriatric Medicine Service provides acute, rehabilitation and outpatient care for older people across the Waikato district. The role offers a broad scope of practice, including emergency geriatric care, inpatient rehabilitation, comprehensive geriatric assessment, ambulatory and outpatient clinics, and specialist consultation across medical and surgical specialties.
Waikato Hospital provides a broad and clinically diverse environment where you can develop areas of practice within Geriatric Medicine, including orthogeriatrics, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, acute care of older people, rehabilitation and complex geriatric assessment. The role also includes specialist advice to primary care and other clinical teams.
Teaching and supervision are important components of the role, with opportunities to support basic and advanced trainees, as well as nurses and allied health professionals. You will also contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and service development.
This is a permanent 1.0 FTE position, working 80 hours per fortnight.

About the Team/Service
Waikato Hospital is a major tertiary teaching hospital with more than 700 beds and is the largest hospital in the Midland region, providing a wide range of specialist medical and surgical services. We provide a wide range of specialist medical and surgical services and serves a diverse population across the Waikato.
Our well established specialist Geriatric Medicine Service provides comprehensive assessment and management of older people with frailty, multimorbidity, cognitive impairment and complex medical needs. The team works across the acute emergency setting, inpatient services, ambulatory and outpatient clinics, and provides specialist consultation to other clinical teams throughout the hospital. The service also supports the wider Waikato region through specialist outreach to Thames, Taumarunui and Tokoroa.
We are entering an exciting period of development, providing an opportunity for clinicians to contribute to how Geriatric Medicine is delivered across the Waikato. We are looking for someone who is interested not only in providing excellent clinical care, but also in contributing to service development, quality improvement, education and the future direction of the specialty.

About You
You will be an experienced Physician with specialist qualifications in Geriatric Medicine, with a strong commitment to providing high-quality, person-centred care for older people.
Your qualifications, training and experience will enable you to:
Provide specialist Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine services, including inpatient consultative support across medical and surgical teams.
Undertake comprehensive geriatric assessments, including assessment of frailty, cognition and capacity, particularly for complex and pre-operative patients.
Oversee and contribute to rehabilitation services, supporting optimal recovery and functional outcomes.
Provide clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team, working collaboratively with allied health professionals and community services.
Contribute to healthy ageing initiatives, service development and strategic planning.
Participate in clinical audit, clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
Provide teaching and supervision to junior medical staff, trainees and other health professionals.
Contribute to the ongoing development and shaping of Geriatric Medicine services across the Waikato.
