About the Role
Whangārei Hospital is a 250-bed district hospital providing a full range of specialist services, including ICU. You'll join a supportive team of 5.5 FTE Geriatricians delivering specialist care across Northland's diverse urban and rural communities.
This is an exciting time to join our service. Following a major redesign in 2020, we have developed a highly regarded Acute Frailty model that includes:
- A dedicated 10–12 bed Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) Unit
- A comprehensive multidisciplinary team including Gerontology Nurse Specialists, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, specialist pharmacist, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy and Social Worker
- A front-door frailty service working closely with the Emergency Department
- Innovative pathways focused on maintaining independence and improving outcomes for older people
Our service also provides:
- A 20-bed rehabilitation ward covering stroke, orthopaedic and general rehabilitation
- A five-day a week orthogeriatric service
- Specialist outreach clinics to three rural community hospitals
- Strong community partnerships with primary care and residential care facilities

About you
To be considered you must have or be eligible for specialist (or locum tenens) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in an Internal Medicine Vocational scope of practice.
