About the Role
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference as part of a service dedicated to delivering excellent diabetes care across the Waikato region.
We are seeking a Consultant Diabetes Specialist to join our progressive and well-established team at Waikato Hospital. This a permanent role (part time considered) offers a rewarding mix of outpatient and regional service delivery and opportunities to contribute to service development. There may be an opportunity to also work within another service to increase FTE. You will be well supported by a strong culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous learning.

Key responsibilities:
Provide high‑quality specialist diabetes care across outpatient and regional settings
Contribute to multidisciplinary team‑based care and service development
Support education for patients, whānau (family), and healthcare partners
Participate in inpatient diabetes consults as required
Engage in quality improvement, research, and teaching activities

About the Team/Service
Waikato Hospital is home to one of New Zealand’s largest diabetes services, providing care to patients in partnership with general practice, and secondary care teams. The service includes:
Diabetes in Pregnancy
High Risk Foot
Inpatient Diabetes Team
Insulin Pump Services
Youth and Young Adults
The Diabetes Service operates across the Waikato region, delivering specialist care to a population of more than 500,000.
You will join:
6 Consultant Diabetes Specialists
2 Registrars
An experienced and dedicated nursing and allied health team including two nurse practitioners and 15 nurse specialists
The service also hosts a busy clinical research unit involved in studies of emerging and novel therapies.
As a teaching hospital and a campus of the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and, the University of Waikato Graduate School of Medicine, Waikato Hospital offers opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
About You
You will be a qualified Consultant Diabetes Specialist who is passionate about delivering high-quality care and working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team and:
Be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
Hold a current driver licence
Demonstrate a commitment to clinical excellence, education and service development
Be available to start the role as soon as possible
