About the Role
Our anaesthetists have a generalist skill set, though our department is also strengthened by staff with sub-specialty training and experience. At Counties Manukau we work together to support a wide range of surgical specialties, providing high quality care for both elective surgery and a busy acute workload. Our working environment is fast paced but with a warm and friendly vibe that many describe as a “family feel”. You can look forward to a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues.
About the Team/Service/ Location
A diverse range of clinical settings is on offer, which includes of course the new Manukau Health Park facility (Project Overview ) in addition to the 24 existing theatres across Middlemore Hospital and Manukau Surgical Centre. The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Counties Manukau serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland.
Some additional facts about the Counties Manukau District:
- Middlemore Hospital is a busy, acute 800-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital with 14 theatres. 8km away Manukau Health Park provides clinic facilities and lower complexity and short stay surgery over 10 theatres with the new 4 theatre unit opening soon.
- Home to the National Burns Centre
- Receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial surgery and rigid bronchoscopy.
- Approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes a year and our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over 7000 babies annually.
- Other specialties include – general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology
- Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics
- The anaesthetic department provides a small but increasing amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac catheterisation lab.
- We are a friendly department with a culture of continuous improvement. We have weekly morbidity and mortality meetings and have an active internal education program. Our department has special interest sub-specialty groups and representation on a number of hospital committees and we participate in the ANZCA Clinical Trials Network. We are a training hospital, with 35 trainees, and our SMOs actively participate in College roles, including supervisors of training, examiners, and ANZCA committees.
