About the Role
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist - Diabetes, you’ll use your advanced diabetes expertise to support people living with diabetes across Te Matau a Māui, providing specialist assessment, advice and care planning that empowers patients and whānau to self‑manage their condition. Your work will include running nurse‑led clinics, developing individualised care plans, supporting primary and secondary care teams, and delivering education that aligns with current diabetes guidelines and best practice.
You’ll play a key leadership role in driving clinical excellence and service improvement across the Diabetes & Endocrine Service. You’ll provide expert consultation on complex cases, guide multidisciplinary teams, model evidence‑based practice, and contribute to service development initiatives that enhance patient flow, equity, and overall outcomes for people with diabetes.

About the Team/Service/ Location
The Diabetes & Endocrine Service is a supportive, multidisciplinary team committed to improving outcomes for people living with diabetes throughout Hawke’s Bay. Working alongside nursing colleagues, medical specialists, allied health providers and community‑based partners, the team is focused on delivering high‑quality, culturally responsive care across the lifespan and across care settings.
Collaboration is central to the way the service works, with strong links across primary care, specialist services, Māori health partners and regional networks. You’ll join a team that values innovation, continuous quality improvement, and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in everyday practice.

About you
You’ll be an experienced, confident and highly skilled diabetes nurse ready to step into a specialist leadership role. You will bring:
- Current NZ Nursing Council registration and APC
- Postgraduate nursing qualification (PG Diploma or working towards Clinical Master’s)
- At least five years’ recent clinical experience in diabetes nursing
- A PDRP portfolio at Expert level (or commitment to achieve within required timeframe)
- Strong assessment, critical thinking and clinical decision‑making capability
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence and support others
- Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- A commitment to equity, cultural safety and applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
Desirable: experience in continuous quality improvement, specialist diabetes accreditation, and familiarity with diabetes care standards.
