About the Role
As the Clinical Nurse Manager for Surgical Outpatients, you’ll provide both operational management and clinical leadership across a wide range of specialist outpatient services - including General Surgery, Maxillofacial, ENT, Urology, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Vascular and Ophthalmology.
You’ll oversee daily operations, ensure safe and efficient patient flow, lead service delivery improvements, and maintain high standards of patient care. The role carries significant responsibility, including budget oversight, staff leadership, safe‑staffing management, and ensuring compliance with clinical, legal and organisational requirements.
This is a senior leadership position where you’ll work autonomously, make informed decisions to support service needs, lead change, solve complex issues as they arise, and nurture strong relationships with clinical teams and strategic partners.

About the Team/Service/ Location
You will lead the Surgical Outpatients team at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, guiding approximately 40 FTE across multiple specialties. The team includes nurses, healthcare assistants, administration staff, medical specialists and allied health partners who work collaboratively to deliver high‑quality, timely outpatient services for the region.
As part of the Hospital Group, you’ll work closely with the Associate General Manager, Director of Nursing, Hospital Group leadership team and colleagues across inpatient and outpatient settings. This is a dynamic, fast‑paced environment where teamwork, communication and continuous improvement are central to how care is delivered.

About you
You are an experienced senior nurse with strong leadership capability and a passion for delivering safe, effective and patient‑centred care. To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Essential
- Current NZ Nursing Council registration and APC
- A postgraduate nursing qualification (preferably PGDip) and working towards Master’s level
- At least 6–8 years of recent clinical experience in the relevant specialty area
- Proven ability to lead and develop high‑performing teams
- Strong understanding of business and financial management principles
- Experience managing safe‑staffing, rostering and HR processes
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication, problem‑solving and time‑management skills
- Expert‑level PDRP portfolio
- Confidence speaking and engaging with groups
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity in practice
Desired
- Knowledge of political and legislative drivers affecting the health sector
- Previous leadership experience within a large or complex health environment
You’ll also demonstrate professionalism, integrity, resilience, and a strong drive for results — as well as self‑awareness and commitment to ongoing leadership growth.
