Health New Zealand Waikato is seeking applications from experienced, motivated and detail-oriented Level 3 or above Clinical Coder with practical clinical coding experience using ICD 10-AM 12th edition to join our team in Waikato on a permanent, full-time basis.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to the efficient operation of our health services, and you will be responsible for identifying and translating inpatient medical procedures, interventions and diagnoses into codes using various systems such as but not limited to:
- Patient management systems (PMS)
- Electronic document repositories
- 3M Encoder
- TurboCoder

About the Team/Service
The Waikato Clinical Coding team provides a timely and accurate clinical coding function that translates narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries and other health related problems and procedures into alpha-numeric codes.
The intended outcome is that accurate coded data is available within agreed timeframes that facilitate health care planning and funding, research and comparative data and statistical analysis at local, national and international levels.
Our team at Waikato are highly skilled, digitally enabled professionals at the forefront of digital innovation working within our secure health record systems and coding tools to ensure accuracy, efficiency and national compliance. Our coders are valued contributors to data-driven healthcare, playing a key role in quality improvement, health analytics, and future-focused service planning. Our Waikato team code approximately 10,000+ events per month.
About you
Applicants will need to clearly display strengths with managing multiple, high pressure, high demand workflows, competing priorities and attention to detail. Your command of the English language must be clear and concise both in own articulation and narrative and/or receiving and understanding.
Demonstrated experience and associated evidenced education is essential to be considered for the role along with working knowledge of computer-based systems such as Microsoft Office suite, ICD-10AM 12th Edition, HIMAA/NZ, ACE/ECC Coding qualification and/or software related directly to in-care hospital environments. Please provide a brief outline of your demonstrated experience in relation to how it translates to this role within the required cover letter.
Essential qualifications and experience:
- Current clinical coding experience in ICD 10-AM 12th Edition at Level 3 of above
- HIMMA Clinical Coding Certificate or New Zealand recognised equivalent
- Solid understanding of Casemix systems and Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG’s)
- Demonstrated accuracy, efficiency and reliability in applying clinical coding knowledge independently
