About the Role

Applications are invited for an Advanced Fellowship in Echocardiography and Cardiac CT at Auckland City Hospital. This is a 12-month fixed term role commencing in February 2026.

The Fellowship seeks to provide intensive supervised training in echocardiography and cardiac CT. There will be interaction with in-patient and out-patient teams and sonographers. In this role you will be responsible for supporting day to day running of the echo department.

The fellow will be expected to:

  • Independently perform and report all modes of echo; transthoracic (including contrast studies), transoesophageal (including structural pathologies) and stress echo (exercise & pharmacological) in accordance with regional and international guidelines. This work includes supporting cardiac theatres with peri-operative TOE procedural and TOE-cardioversion.
  • Support x2 cardiac CT lists weekly with a view to running an independent list with appropriate accreditation
  • Review and present imaging echo data at the weekly regional Cardio-surgical conference for patients under the care of the Te Toka Tumai but also referred from throughout New Zealand, particularly those undergoing cardiac surgery, cardiac and lung transplant and mechanical circulatory support.
  • Support a dedicated sonographer lead Heart Valve Clinic
  • Rostered outpatient clinics (1 clinic per week)
  • Contribute to inpatient care as rostered as needed
  • Organise and complete a clinical research project
  • Achieve a level of International Echo +/- CT Accreditation (European or American societies)

About the Team/Service/ Location

The position is primarily based at Auckland City Hospital, an 1165 bed teaching hospital. Approximately 1100 coronary and 250 structural interventional procedures are undertaken at Auckland City Hospital each year. The only public cardiac surgical service in the region is at Auckland City Hospital.

About you

To be successful in this role you will: 

  •       Have or be eligible for vocational registration with the NZ Medical Council Registration with NZ Medical Council.
  •       Have experience and training in general adult cardiology
  •       Have completed RACP advanced training in cardiology, or the equivalent position for specialist qualification, and demonstrated a collaborative            approach to working within the multidisciplinary team.
