Prevocational Medical Education Fellow - Fixed Term (10 months)

The exciting opportunity of a Prevocational Medical Education Fellow for the 2026 Training Year has arisen at Te Toka Tumai/Auckland City Hospital.
Te Toka Tumai is one of the largest districts employing Resident Medical Officers in Aotearoa, with a strong emphasis on clinical education and teaching support.
The core purpose of the Medical Education Fellow (MEF) role is to support the transition of House Officers into the workforce. The role contributes to the education and training programme of prevocational house officers by delivering and advancing educational programmes and initiatives, providing pastoral care and hands on support, and to assist with achieving Medical Council accreditation requirements. The post holder will gain broad professional experience and learning in medical education and leadership with career-long impact, whilst maintaining and developing clinical skills.
The MEF will have the opportunity to participate and lead in:
PGY1 and PGY2 medical education and teaching
Advocacy, mentoring, and pastoral and professional support of prevocational house officers
Project work, change management and quality improvement
Research projects inc. presentation at relevant events
Liaison between the house officers and the medical education and clinical leadership teams
This is a fixed term position of about 10 months, with an end date of February 2027 aligned to the Registrar changeover date. The start date can be negotiable for the right candidate, but ideally our candidate can start in late March 2026. There is opportunity to build a clinical component into the role by negotiation.
The candidates we are looking for will:
- Have a current Annual Practising Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Have full registration with MCNZ i.e. achieved endorsement removal or be a Registrar
- Have an interest in education and training with some experience in teaching, coordination, management and/or leadership experience in medical education
- Have experience in complex health environments; either within metro Auckland or transferable skills
- Have the ability to connect with others to influence change
- Possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality and be trustworthy
- Have interest and/or knowledge and/or experience in research
- Have the ability and enthusiasm for leading transformation for your colleagues
- Be flexible, positive and a proactive problem-solver
- Understand that medical education has a direct link to patient care
- Have great time management skills with the ability to prioritise
- Hold a record of punctuality and good attendance
- Have sound clinical skills and references
- Be able to work autonomously within agreed boundaries
Be committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in training education and training initiatives
