About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Social Worker to join the Cancer Support Psychology & Social Work Team at Middlemore Hospital. This is a pivotal role within our cancer services, supporting patients and their whaanau through some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Working within a small, highly collaborative team of social workers and psychologists, you will provide specialist psychosocial support to patients from early investigation through to the completion of treatment. You will also work closely with multidisciplinary hospital teams and community organisations to ensure coordinated, patient-centred care.

This is an opportunity to bring your clinical expertise, leadership, and innovation to a service dedicated to improving outcomes and addressing health inequities in cancer care.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will provide comprehensive psychosocial assessments and deliver supportive interventions for patients and their families across both hospital and community settings. The position includes occasional home visits, requiring a full driver’s licence. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and external community agencies to ensure coordinated care and continuity of support. There will also be opportunities to contribute to staff education, service development initiatives, and research activities, while actively promoting equitable health outcomes in alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

About You

You are a compassionate, skilled, and adaptable health social worker who thrives in a team environment. You bring professionalism, initiative, and a strong commitment to improving patient wellbeing.

You will have:

  • Registration with the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) and a current APC
  • A minimum of 5 year’s experience in health social work
  • Strong clinical assessment and report writing skills
  • Cultural awareness and understanding
  • A full, clean driver’s licence

What we can offer
