Pharmacy Technician, Middlemore Hospital, Counties Manukau, Permanent Fulltime

  • Working in the Inpatient Dispensary (IPD) as a pharmacy technician, you will be faced with variety of different technical tasks and responsibilities related to the dispensing and supply of medicines Every day is likely to have something different

About the Role

You will have a variety of work with the core objective to support safe and efficient supply of medicines to our patients. This includes dispensing medicines to named patients and replenishing ward stock through automated MedStations (Pyxis) or Imprest. We utilise advanced technologies to manage medicine supply and identify opportunities to improve patient safety and efficiency of our dispensary services, and there will be opportunities for you to contribute to the optimisation of these systems.    There is also the potential for you to be involved in the provision of more complex services such as the management of chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition and Home IV antibiotic orders.

About the Team/Service/ Location

You will work alongside three dispensary Pharmacists and 17 Pharmacy Technicians, as well as interact with staff outside of the inpatient pharmacy e.g., clinical ward staff both by phone and when you refill ward medicines and maintain medication areas. The role contributes to the day to day running of the dispensary and supply functions under the supervision of a pharmacist to ensure the economic and efficient supply, safe storage, and distribution of medicines.

The role is well supported by the dispensary team, clinical pharmacists, and the wider pharmacy service.

About you

  • You must be a qualified Pharmacy Technician - NZQA Level 5 qualification (minimum)
  • You must be capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • You must be accurate and efficient and able to work independently
  • Recent work experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy is preferred
  • You must be an effective communicator (both written and oral)
  • It is an advantage to have knowledge of the Pharmacy electronic systems we use e.g., ePharmacy, Pyxis
