About the Role

The Cancer Support Psychology & Social Work Team at Middlemore Hospital is seeking a motivated and compassionate Social Worker to join our dedicated cancer services team.

This is a meaningful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their whaanau. You will support patients from early investigation through to the completion of treatment, addressing the psychosocial challenges that arise throughout their cancer journey.

In this role, you will provide comprehensive psychosocial assessments and deliver supportive interventions to individuals and their families across both hospital and community settings. The position involves working closely within a small, collaborative team of social workers and psychologists, while also liaising with other healthcare professionals and community organisations to ensure coordinated, holistic care. Occasional home visits are required, so a full driver’s licence is essential. There will also be opportunities to contribute to staff education, service development initiatives, and research activities within the service.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and a strong commitment to improving patient outcomes and addressing health inequities for people affected by cancer. You will be comfortable working in a small team environment, demonstrate sound clinical judgement, and have strong assessment and report writing skills. Cultural awareness and an understanding of diverse communities is essential.

You may be an experienced health social worker from a community or inpatient setting, or a new graduate seeking to begin your career within a supportive specialist team. Alignment with organisational values and a positive, proactive attitude are highly regarded.

Essential

  • Registered Social Worker with SWRB and a current APC
  • Experience in health social work
  • Strong clinical assessment and report writing skills
  • Cultural awareness and understanding
  • Full, clean driver’s licence

What we can offer

  • Annual practicing certificate is refunded
  • Funding for professional development opportunities
  • Regular supervision and support to continue to develop your knowledge and skills
