The Role:
Are you an experienced paediatric nurse ready to step into a senior clinical role where you can truly shape outcomes for Tamariki, Rangatahi, and their whaanau? Kidz First is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our team and lead excellence in child health across our inpatient services.
This is a pivotal opportunity to influence care delivery for some of our most vulnerable and complex young patients, while championing culturally safe, whaanau-centred care in line with the values of Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora – Counties Manukau.
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will proactively provide advanced nursing expertise, coordination, and leadership across Kidz First inpatient services. You’ll work in partnership with medical, allied health, nursing, and community teams to deliver safe, effective, and whaanau-directed care.
Your role will include supporting Tamariki/Rangatahi with complex health needs, including those with chronic conditions and Rheumatic Heart Fever and ensuring seamless care across the health continuum.
This role requires expert clinical reasoning, autonomy, and a passion for equity, innovation, and quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Expertise & Leadership
- Deliver advanced specialist nursing care within the Kidz First inpatient setting.
- Act as a visible clinical role model and resource person.
- Provide expert assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for children with complex needs.
- Lead the development and updating of clinical standards, pathways, and guidelines (including Rheumatic Fever/RHD).
- Collaborate across inpatient, outpatient, primary care, and community teams to ensure consistent, equitable care.
Whaanau-Centred Care
- Advocate for Tamariki/Rangatahi and their whaanau to ensure full understanding of care plans and treatment options.
- Provide education, health promotion, and access to resources and psychosocial support.
- Build effective therapeutic relationships grounded in empathy, cultural safety, and respect.
Quality Improvement & Research
- Participate in clinical audit, reflective practice, journal clubs, mortality/morbidity reviews, and quality projects.
- Contribute to research initiatives and evaluation of clinical practices.
Professional Development
- Maintain and advance specialist competency, including PDRP requirements.
- Stay current with national and international clinical trends in paediatric nursing.
- Engage in ongoing postgraduate study.

About You:
- NZ Registered Nurse with current Practicing Certificate
- Minimum of five years’ paediatric nursing experience, post registration in NZ
- Minimum PDRP of Proficient or Expert
- Relevant Post graduate qualification completed or in progress (Minimum post graduate diploma)
