About the Role

The Charge Nurse Manager (CNM) for the Whitiora Diabetes and Rheumatology Services provides professional, clinical, and operational leadership to specialist nursing teams across both services. This pivotal role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-focused care while driving service development, innovation, and workforce sustainability.

Working closely with the Service Manager and clinical leaders, you will lead and coordinate service activity, support integration across primary, secondary, and advance health equity for our local communities.

 

In this leadership role, you will

  • Act as a resilient role model and clinical leader, fostering excellence in nursing practice and patient-centred care.
  • Mentor and support staff through reflective practice, orientation, and ongoing professional development and service improvement change.
  • Promote equity by collaboratively shaping services that meet the needs of Maaori, Pacific, and other communities experiencing health disparities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, service partners, and sector leaders to strengthen integration and service innovation.
  • Apply research evidence, benchmarking, and technological insight to guide best practice and inform service development.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical & Professional Leadership – Provide expert nursing leadership and operational oversight across Diabetes and Rheumatology, ensuring safe, evidence-based, and whaanau-centred care.
  • Workforce Development – Lead recruitment, performance management, education, and succession planning to build and sustain a skilled and resilient nursing workforce.
  • Quality, Risk & Innovation – Drive continuous quality improvement, research, and audit initiatives; proactively manage risks and uphold organisational safety standards.
  • Resource & Financial Management – Manage budgets, monitor variances, and contribute to strategic business planning to ensure sustainable service delivery.
  • Technology & Strategic Partnerships – Leverage information, agentic and clinical technologies to enhance decision-making, while strengthening local, regional, and national networks to advance service development and equity.

 

About You

We are seeking an experienced nurse leader who is committed to equity, quality, and service innovation. You will bring:

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of NZ and a valid Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Postgraduate qualifications (completed or in progress) in leadership, management, or a relevant clinical area.
  • A minimum of 7 years’ recent clinical experience relevant to Diabetes, Rheumatology, or chronic conditions.
  • Proven leadership or management experience, including project and performance management, staff development, and change leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement, research, and evidence-based practice.
  • Advanced skills in communication, problem-solving, and collaboration across complex, multidisciplinary environments.
  • Current PDRP at a senior nurse level (or working towards).
