Registered Nurse - Forensic Court Liaison Service

  • 2x Permanent, Full-time roles (80 hours per fortnight)
  • Monday to Friday
  • Based in Point Chevalier

The Auckland Regional Forensic Psychiatry Service (RFPS), Mason Clinic, is the largest Forensic Mental Health Service in New Zealand. We serve the Northern region and five prisons.

We deliver a comprehensive range of Forensic Mental Health Services, including secure inpatient acute and rehabilitation services which connect to community rehabilitation programmes, services for offenders with an intellectual disability and culturally sensitive programmes for Maori. Court liaison and prison mental health services, including a regional service to Northland Region Corrections Facility at Ngawha and Northland are also provided.

About the role and about you

As a key member of the Forensic Service, you will be working in the District Courts advising on issues related to an offender’s current mental health. You will provide mental health assessment reports and risk assessment reports on offenders to Judges, Lawyers, Police and Psychiatric Consultants. You will be pivotal in diverting offenders from the Justice system into mental health. You will work predominantly in the court environment and will be supported by Court Liaison Team on site and RFPS at Mason Clinic. The work is Monday to Friday, and there is some flexibility with hours of work.

You will also be engaged in some triage and liaison with General Mental Health Services. You will be appointed as a Duly Authorised Officer as it relates to the Mental Health Act after training.

Knowledge of the Mental Health Act is important. You will also become experienced and competent in the use of other legislation used in the court setting such as Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act, Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care & Rehabilitation Act) 2003 and Criminal Justice Act after training and support.
